Curator’s statement “GATHERING LIGHT”
Following the exhibition "Persistence of Light,” artist Cheryl Calleri has created a new body of work titled ”Gathering Light.” Vessel Gallery presents distinctively poetic light sculptures created after the artist had worked in succession on artworks using scientific methodology, to developing surrealistic cosmic collage scans, to the capture of light and shadow affects via re-creation of imagined planetary alignments and rotations marking key historic moments. These bodies of works led to Calleri’s deep exploration of light behavior in this new work, and thereby pronounces a new abstract language through use of light illumination and reflection as a primary medium.
"Gathering Light" exhibits a series of light sculptures created through a process of chance and response, from the innate curiosity of the artist, to the final expression of a series of illuminations that capture the artist's experience. In this body of work Calleri is most interested in evoking a visceral response by presenting the viewer with an opportunity to discover and experience how aura and ambiance may conjure mood, or stir thoughts. Could observation of Calleri's light sculptures have a physical or metaphysical effect on our psyche or physical vitality, or within our bodies? Could these light sensations affect the energy of our breath or heartbeat, or provoke imaginations of the unknown? Perhaps these ethereal light creations provide paths toward spiritual knowledge, enlightenment, or devotion - an exploration of the intangible, or existing as vehicles of meditation; light can be said to deepen consciousness. One thing for certain, it is Calleri’s curiosity that provides a vehicle to trust and contemplate our personal visceral responses to the mysterious happenings of each work. – Lonnie Lee
Cheryl Calleri | Statement “GATHERING LIGHT”
Light itself is the subject of Gathering Light. While working with light, my studio has become a place of experimentation. I set parameters and introduce combinations of mirrored shapes from various sources while testing the quality of the reflections. Shadows add a three dimensional effect. Natural light filters through the room, adding more reflections. The behavior of light under these conditions has an intellectual explanation yet the feeling is visceral and mysterious. Each sculpture is a contemplative encounter that entwines subjectivity and logic.
